On Sunday, September 2nd, shortly after midnight, a fire broke out in a bakery and quickly spread. As rumors of suspicious foreigners setting fires spread, the streets became chaotic. The wind had already fanned the bakery fire into a firestorm by the time large-scale demolitions were ordered on Sunday night, defeating such measures. The death toll is unknown, but it is thought to be in the low hundreds. Everyone in the area grabbed their items and fled out of their beloved houses. Thousands of houses were burned down but they were all eventually rebuilt but it took many years. The fire continued to burn and lasted for around four straight days. The wind continued to change direction and fanned out the fire to different areas. Finally, the fire stopped and even though few people lost their lives, the fire was one of the worst in the 17th century.
