"Sense and Sensibility" is a novel by author Jane Austen. One of the main characters, Elinor, would be the representation of the "sense" in the title. It is not that she is not a sensitive woman. Elinor has feelings just like her mother and her sister, Marianne. However, those two characters allow themselves to actually feel and show how they feel, while Elinor maintains her propriety. She behaves in a prudent, careful, and polite manner, taking care of things and people no matter what.

Yet, there were two times in the novel where Elinor's sense of propriety was upset, and she couldn't help but show her feelings. First, she had a hard time concealing her emotions when she heard of Edward and Lucy's engagement. Second, she displayed her emotions when Edward showed up to her house all of a sudden, after Elinor had been told he had gotten married. Those two times deeply affected her ability to keep her feelings in check.

She sighed. At least her soul was not taken away by the police. At least, not yet. It was strange to her. The police controlled whether you kept your soul or not. No- your parents controlled it, if you had any of those. Many of the children had their souls sold and were on the other side of the wall that separated the soulless and the souled. You lived in the souled, if you were rich enough. The little girl was not rich at all, yet she still managed to survive with the souled. She chewed on her bread. She shivered at the thought of a VEP getting her soul.
