Why is the consideration of a larger imagined audience so important when writing, if in reality it is likely that your professor may be the only person reading this essay? Why is it not enough for us to simply state our opinions and be done with it?
Who is your target audience for this week’s essay? How do they think? What needs, challenges, or frustrations do they have?
How does your proposed policy help people?
What makes your proposal feasible (in other words, affordable, realistic, or practical)? And if it is feasible, why do you think this policy is not already in place?
Hi. Some of these questions require a personal answer, which is created by you based on your own opinions. In that case, I'll introduce you to answers that can be used as a template for you to create your own answers. I hope this is helpful.
1. It is important to imagine a larger audience when writing, to stimulate your writing skills and present arguments and ideas to people of different minds. This variety of thoughts allows you to prepare your arguments well and find efficient ways to justify them.
2. Because our opinions need to be substantiated by elements that everyone can see, to be considered true. An opinion that is not proven, cannot be considered correct, because it is created without the analysis of facts and evidence, presenting only the perception of its author and this cannot be considered correct.
3. The target audience refers to the audience you want to reach with your essay, that is, what types of people do you want to read and understand the arguments you are presenting in this text and why it is important that this type of person read your text. Also, you must imagine how this text is relevant to these people and how they are helped by it.
4. You must observe how the proposal you present in the text is possible to happen and how it can improve a community or population. However, even though it is a proposal that can be implemented, it does not happen and you should think about the reasons why it does not happen. These reasons can be political, economic, social, environmental, among others.

The Pollution Problem by Roberto Bererra
Unfortunately, pollution is like air: it’s everywhere! Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment that can cause damage and harm to humans, animals, and the environment. It takes on a number of different forms, from chemicals and garbage to something as seemingly innocent as light or noise.
Pollution comes from a variety of sources. In addition, it alters, changes, and even destroys a variety of places. For example, exhaust from cars pollutes the air. When it rains, runoff from fertilizers and pesticides, which farmers use to help crops grow, can pollute the water in oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams. Garbage dumped in landfills is not only an eyesore, but also a source of harmful gases that can damage the earth’s atmosphere. Light pollution, which comes in the form of bright streetlights or signs, disrupts the view of the night sky. Noise pollution caused by cars, trucks, and machines interrupts the natural sounds of the world around us, such as birds singing or leaves rustling.
The types of pollution and their effects vary greatly. At the same time, however, they are related; each type of pollution affects the other types. An example of the connection between different types of pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is caused mostly by sulfur or nitrogen emissions given off by sources such as car exhaust and the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. These harmful chemicals rise into the atmosphere where they react with other compounds and then fall as an acidic form of rain, sleet, or snow. Acid rain damages plants and buildings, contaminates soil and water, and has a negative effect on animals, fish, and even humans.
Pollution has other effects, too. Breathing toxic air or drinking polluted water can cause humans and animals to develop health problems that can be serious and sometimes deadly. The deaths of too many members of a certain species of animal can upset the local ecosystem, or the area in which they live. As a result, weather patterns and climates can also change.
Though pollution is everywhere, there are ways to help prevent it. By walking or riding bikes—instead of driving cars—people can help decrease air pollution. People can also buy and eat organic foods to support farmers that do not use fertilizers on their crops. It is also a good idea to take old things that people intend to throw away and find new ways to use them. A great way to help the environment is to recycle. Save items like used paper, glass and plastic bottles, and metal cans. Then, take them to a recycling center where they can be turned into new products to be used again. Some cities and towns even have recycling programs in place so all you have to do is leave your recyclable items on the curb on a certain day each week. It doesn’t get much easier to help the environment and reduce pollution than that!
The statements below make persuasive appeals to the reader about the dangers of pollution. Some of the statements make appeals to logic (logos); some make appeals to emotion (pathos); and some make appeals to ethics or establish the authority of the speaker (ethos). Move each statement into the column that matches its type of appeal.
Answer:
a) Garbage dumped in landfills are an eyesore to the general public.
Logos
I would argue that this is logos, the appeal to logic. This is because this is a reason why people should not pollute; garbage in landfills, a side effect of pollution, will be an eyesore. Since we don't want eyesores, we should not pollute.
b) As an environmental expert, I can speak with authority about the dangers of pollution.
Ethos
This is an appeal to ethics, or ethos, because of the phrase "an expert", as well as the word "authority". Being an environmental expert gives power to their opinions.
c) Pollution has a severe impact upon native animal populations.
Logos
This is an appeal to logic, or logos. This is because this is a logical argument - a cause and effect. Pollution has a severe impact on native animal populations, so we should not pollute.
d) If you pollute, you should be thrown in prison.
Pathos
This one is also a bit more difficult, so I would do process of elimination. Let's first look at logos. It doesn't really follow any logic. Let's next look at ethos. This one is a bit more promising, as you can argue that the government, or prison is an authority, but I would go with pathos, the appeal to emotion. There are two sides here; one is arguing that people who pollute should go to prison, and since people don't want to go to prison, it provokes an emotional response. Furthermore, prisons have negative connotations, so it could evoke a negative response within the reader that links prisons with pollution.
e) Pollution is an immoral act that instills guilt and shame in the person polluting.
Pathos
This is an appeal to emotion, or pathos. The keywords here are "guilt" and "shame". This is to try to invoke the emotions of guilt and shame within those who pollute in an attempt to get them not to pollute anymore.
Hope this helps!
Identify the kind of reasoning used in each of the following statements. What weaknesses, if any, can you find in the reasoning of each?
Contrary to what the chemical industry argues, limiting pesticide use does not threaten the food supply. Sweden has cut back on pesticides by 50 percent over the last few years with almost no decrease in its harvest. The Campbell Soup Company uses no pesticides at all on tomatoes grown in Mexico, and they reap as much fruit as ever. Many California farmers who practice pesticide-free agriculture have actually experienced increases in their crop yields.
Answer:
The reasoning presented is called specific instances.
Explanation:
The reasoning called specific instances can be observed in arguments that show that the conduct or information shown by a company or institution does not match reality. We can see that this type of reasoning was shown in the text presented in the question above, where an argument is shown that states that the agrochemical industry claims that their products are essential for a large harvest, but reality shows something completely contrary. Although this argument is strengthened by supporting details that show countries that have reduced the use of pesticides and have not had a reduction in harvests, the argument becomes somewhat weakened by not presenting this information in numerical data, which proves that the harvests are still voluminous, even without the pesticide juice.
3. Read this fictional excerpt from a newspaper article about a war. Based on this excerpt, what
additional information about the writer's historical context would help in analyzing the passage?
What questions would this additional information answer? (4 points)
Answer and Explanation:
The author could give the date on which the war began and the date on which the ceasefire was determined. In addition, the author could present the dates that the meetings between the two countries were determined and the terms discussed. This would allow the reader to answer questions about whether this war is recent and what the problems were between the two countries.
Furthermore, the author could present the social and economic problems that the citizens of Utopia are going through. This would allow the reader to answer the question about what the citizens' claims are.

Why do you think Jessica's story was made to sound more heroic than she said it was?
Answer:
Her Iraqi guards had long fled, she was being well cared for - and doctors had already tried to free her. John Kampfner discovers the real story behind a modern American war myth
Explanation:
Jessica Lynch became an icon of the war. An all-American heroine, the story of her capture by the Iraqis and her rescue by US special forces became one of the great patriotic moments of the conflict. It couldn't have happened at a more crucial moment, when the talk was of coalition forces bogged down, of a victory too slow in coming.
Her rescue will go down as one of the most stunning pieces of news management yet conceived. It provides a remarkable insight into the real influence of Hollywood producers on the Pentagon's media managers, and has produced a template from which America hopes to present its future wars.
