1. What textual evidence reveals the state of Wiesel’s faith at the beginning of the book?

2. What specific events affect his views on God?

3. How does Wiesel connect the events with his views on God as the book progresses? What evidence reveals this?

4. What textual evidence reveals the state of Wiesel’s belief in God by the end of the book?

Answers

At the beginning of the book, textual evidence reveals the state of Wiesel's faith as strong and deeply rooted. Wiesel portrays himself as a devout and dedicated believer in God. He describes his fervent prayer, his studies of Jewish religious texts, and his trust in God's protection. This can be seen in passages such as when he says, "Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?"

Several specific events profoundly affect Wiesel's views on God. One significant event is the horrific experience of witnessing the atrocities of the Holocaust, including the merciless killings and the suffering of innocent people. The indifference of God in the face of such immense human suffering challenges Wiesel's belief in a benevolent and just God. The death of his father, whom he had desperately prayed to be saved, also deeply impacts his faith.

As the book progresses, Wiesel connects the events of the Holocaust with his evolving views on God. He questions how a loving God could allow such immense suffering and cruelty to exist. The atrocities he witnesses and experiences shake his belief in divine justice and lead him to question the existence and nature of God. Wiesel's introspection and philosophical musings throughout the book reveal his struggle to reconcile the events he witnesses with his previous beliefs.

By the end of the book, textual evidence reveals a significant shift in Wiesel's belief in God. After enduring the horrors of the Holocaust and witnessing the death and suffering around him, Wiesel's faith is profoundly shattered. He expresses a profound sense of abandonment and concludes that God is either absent or cruel. In the final lines of the book, Wiesel states, "Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes." This reveals the deep loss of faith and the profound impact the events had on his belief in God.

Wiesel says that the prisoners of block 11 (political prisoners) had a "privileged"

death. What two reasons does he give for this?

Answers

Elie Wiesel describes the prisoners of Block 11 (political prisoners) as having a "privileged" death for two reasons.

First, he explains that these prisoners were executed by firing squads instead of being sent to the gas chambers like the majority of prisoners. The firing squad method was considered quicker and perhaps less agonizing compared to the prolonged suffering in the gas chambers.

Second, Wiesel points out that these political prisoners were given the opportunity to be defiant and courageous until the end. They could maintain their dignity and refuse to beg for mercy, facing death with a sense of defiance and resistance.

Wiesel suggests that their deaths, though still horrific and tragic, offered a certain degree of agency and control, contrasting with the dehumanizing and anonymous deaths of those who perished in the gas chambers.

How did Gregor Mendel do on his teacher’s examination?

Answers

Gregor Mendel was a highly respected scholar in his time, and he gained significant recognition for his groundbreaking work in the area of heredity. However, he faced some challenges early in his academic career, including difficulties with his teacher's examination.

Mendel began his academic career by pursuing a degree in philosophy and theology. After completing his studies in these areas, he became interested in the study of natural science, particularly botany. He was able to study this subject in depth at the University of Vienna, where he worked with a renowned botanist named Franz Unger.

Despite his success in botany, Mendel struggled to pass the teacher's examination, which was required for him to become a certified teacher. The examination covered a wide range of topics in natural science, including physics, chemistry, and meteorology, in addition to botany.

Mendel took the exam multiple times, but he was unable to pass it. His lack of success in this area was due in part to the fact that he was more interested in experimental work than in memorizing the theoretical material that was required for the exam.

Despite these setbacks, Mendel remained committed to his work in natural science. He continued to conduct experiments and make important discoveries in the field of genetics, ultimately earning recognition for his groundbreaking work on the inheritance of traits in pea plants. His legacy has had a significant impact on the field of genetics and is still studied and applied today.

Friar Lawrence can be seen as a force for good in this extract. To what extent do you agree with this view of Friar Lawrence based on this extract and the wider play?

Answers

In assessing Friar Lawrence's role as a force for good in the extract and the wider play, I partially agree with this view. Friar Lawrence displays qualities of compassion, wisdom, and a desire for peace, which can be interpreted as positive intentions. In the extract, the Friar expresses his hope that the marriage of Romeo and Juliet could end the ongoing feud between their families. He also provides guidance and advice to both Romeo and Juliet throughout the play, attempting to mediate their conflicts and offer solutions.

However, it is important to note that Friar Lawrence's good intentions become entangled in a web of secrecy and manipulation. He plays a pivotal role in devising the plan for Juliet's fake death, which ultimately leads to tragic consequences. The Friar's decision to administer a sleeping potion to Juliet and his failure to ensure Romeo receives the message about the plan contribute to the deaths of both young lovers. While his intentions may have been well-meaning, his actions demonstrate a lack of foresight and the consequences of his misguided attempts to resolve the situation.

Therefore, while Friar Lawrence exhibits elements of goodwill, his overall contribution to the events of the play can also be viewed as problematic. His actions inadvertently contribute to the tragedy, raising questions about his effectiveness as a force for good.

Based on information in "Earth’s Eye" and "Where I Lived, and What I Lived for," which statement is true of Walden Pond?

A) The future outlook for Walden Pond is optimistic.

B) One can easily spend extended time alone at Walden Pond.

C) Walden Pond became more popular than Thoreau intended.

D) Walden Pond supports a variety of wildlife.

Answers

Based on information from "Earth's Eye" and "Where I Lived, and What I Lived for," it can be concluded that statement D) "Walden Pond supports a variety of wildlife" is true.

In Henry David Thoreau's writings, particularly in "Earth's Eye," he emphasizes the abundance of nature and wildlife at Walden Pond. Thoreau describes the diverse range of animals and plants that inhabit the area surrounding the pond, highlighting its ecological richness. He observes the behavior of birds, fishes, turtles, and other creatures, indicating that Walden Pond is a thriving ecosystem. Thoreau's close connection to the natural world and his deep appreciation for the wilderness around him further support the idea that Walden Pond supports a variety of wildlife. Therefore, statement D is the correct choice. On the other hand, statements A, B, and C are not supported by the information in the mentioned texts. Thoreau's reflections in "Where I Lived, and What I Lived for" primarily focus on the importance of simplicity, self-sufficiency, and solitude rather than the future outlook of Walden Pond. While Walden Pond does offer a secluded environment, Thoreau's experience of solitude is not described as easily achievable or devoid of challenges. Furthermore, although Walden Pond gained some popularity over time, Thoreau's intentions were not explicitly centered around making it a popular destination.

Answers

The central idea of the poem might be that "a. Time renders all people, even great kings, the same in the end." One of the central ideas of the poem Ozymandias is that time is an unstoppable force that eventually fades all empires and triumphs, regardless of how grand they once were. (option b)

The poem narrates the story of Ozymandias, a once powerful king, whose statue now lies in ruins. The inscription on the pedestal of the statue reads: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"However, this inscription contradicts the reality of the statue's condition, which has been wrecked by the power of time. Through his portrayal of a once-great king whose empire is nothing more than a lonely statue in the middle of the desert, Percy Bysshe Shelley warns the readers about the limitations of human power.

Therefore, the central idea of the poem might be that "Time renders all people, even great kings, the same in the end."

Option b: Poetry has a longer lifespan than stone sculptures is not the central idea of the poem Ozymandias. Though, it might be considered an important point since the statue of Ozymandias has been ruined, but the poem's central theme is the destruction of power and fame over time.

a biologist sees that kind of bacteria splits in 2 every 10 min.If there were 4 bacteria on the slide 1 hour ago ,how many are there now

Answers

There would be 256 bacteria on the slide now, one hour later.

If the bacteria split in two every 10 minutes, we can calculate the number of bacteria after a certain time using exponential growth.

In one hour, there are 60 minutes. Since each bacterium splits in two every 10 minutes, there are six 10-minute intervals in one hour. Therefore, the number of bacteria doubles six times in one hour.

Starting with 4 bacteria, the doubling occurs as follows:

1 hour ago: 4 bacteria

After 10 minutes: 4 * 2 = 8 bacteria

After 20 minutes: 8 * 2 = 16 bacteria

After 30 minutes: 16 * 2 = 32 bacteria

After 40 minutes: 32 * 2 = 64 bacteria

After 50 minutes: 64 * 2 = 128 bacteria

After 60 minutes (1 hour): 128 * 2 = 256 bacteria

Therefore, there would be 256 bacteria on the slide now, one hour later.

Answers

Based on the information provided, it appears that the change in pronoun use from "I" to "we" and then to "you" suggests a shift in perspective and audience addressed by the speaker or writer. Let's analyze the potential implications of this change:

1. "I": The use of "I" indicates that the speaker or writer is expressing their own thoughts, opinions, or experiences. It suggests a singular perspective or personal viewpoint.

2. "We": The shift to "we" indicates a broader inclusiveness, suggesting that the speaker or writer is referring to a collective group or a shared experience. It implies that the speaker is aligning themselves with a larger community or group of people who share similar thoughts or opinions.

What or who do you think was behind the door on the right: the lady or the tiger? What would each choice reveal about the princess? Explain your answer. (10 sentences)

Answers

Answer:

"The Lady or the Tiger" is a short story by Frank R. Stockton that leaves the ending open to interpretation.

Explanation:

The story revolves around a princess who must make a difficult choice between two doors, one concealing a ferocious tiger and the other hiding a beautiful lady. The narrative purposefully does not provide a definitive answer to the question of what lies behind the door on the right, leaving it to the reader's imagination.

As an AI language model, I don't possess personal opinions or the ability to infer the intentions of the author. Therefore, I cannot definitively state who or what was behind the door on the right. The choice between the lady or the tiger is deliberately left ambiguous, encouraging readers to engage in speculation and draw their own conclusions based on the information provided.

The story's ending allows for multiple interpretations, each revealing something different about the princess's character. If the princess chose the door on the right and released the tiger, it could imply that she was a jealous and vengeful person, as she would rather see her lover face death than be with another woman. On the other hand, if she directed her lover towards the lady, it could demonstrate her selflessness and desire for his happiness, even at the cost of losing him to someone else.

Ultimately, the interpretation of the story's ending and the princess's motivations behind her choice depend on the reader's own perspective and understanding of human nature. The deliberate ambiguity allows for a range of possibilities and encourages readers to reflect on their own values, biases, and beliefs when considering the consequences of the princess's decision.

Nights and Dragons

From the memoir of author Abigail Prynne

1

I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts.

2

As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could notand did notexist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed.

3

I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed.

4

With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.

5

I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive.

Which sentence from paragraph 4 makes an explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions? (5 points)

A. With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research.

B. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground.

C Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals.

D Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.

Answers

The sentence from paragraph 4 that makes an explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions is: Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals.

The correct answer is option C.

This sentence straightforwardly states that biologists supported the aforementioned ideas with the use of sketches and models that were derived from existing animals. There is no underlying suggestion or hidden meaning in this statement. It presents a clear fact about the actions taken by biologists to support the theories related to dragons.

The author discusses how experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons and proposed alternative explanations. In paragraph 4, they mention that biologists supported these alternative ideas by utilizing sketches and models based on known animals. This statement provides evidence of the scientific backing that these ideas received and presents it as a matter of fact.

By highlighting the involvement of biologists and their use of sketches and models, the author aims to demonstrate that these alternative theories were not merely speculative but were supported by scientific investigation. This adds credibility to the possibility that dragons could have existed based on these proposed explanations.

In conclusion, the sentence "Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals" from paragraph 4 presents a clear and explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions. It contributes to the author's argument by providing scientific support for the alternative theories surrounding the existence of dragons.

A house blueprint has a scale of 1. 5 in. : 4. 5 ft. The length and width of each room in the actual house are 45 ft and 60 ft, respectively.

What is the PERIMETER of the blueprint?

Answers

The perimeter of the blueprint, based on a scale of 1.5 in. : 4.5 ft, is 18 inches. This can be calculated by multiplying the actual perimeter of the room by the scale factor.

To determine the perimeter of the blueprint, we need to use the given scale of 1.5 in. : 4.5 ft. This scale tells us that 1.5 inches on the blueprint represents 4.5 feet in the actual house.

First, we calculate the actual perimeter of the room by adding twice the length and twice the width: 2 * 45 ft + 2 * 60 ft = 90 ft + 120 ft = 210 ft.

Next, we need to apply the scale to find the corresponding measurement on the blueprint. Since 4.5 ft on the blueprint represents 1.5 inches, we can set up a proportion: 4.5 ft / 1.5 inches = 210 ft / x inches.

Solving this proportion, we find that x = (1.5 inches * 210 ft) / 4.5 ft = 7 inches.

Therefore, the perimeter of the blueprint is 7 inches.

Debate on the topic strict discipline alone helps students get educated for students

Answers

Strict discipline alone does not effectively help students get educated. While discipline plays a role in shaping behavior and instilling good habits, it is only one aspect of the educational process. Education is a holistic endeavor that requires a comprehensive approach, including nurturing critical thinking skills, fostering creativity, promoting collaboration, and providing opportunities for personal growth.

Discipline is undoubtedly important in the educational journey of students. It sets boundaries, teaches responsibility, and helps maintain a conducive learning environment. However, strict discipline alone falls short in ensuring students receive a well-rounded education. Education encompasses more than just adhering to rules and regulations; it involves nurturing intellectual curiosity, fostering a love for learning, and cultivating a range of skills that go beyond obedience. To truly educate students, it is crucial to encourage critical thinking skills. Rote memorization and blind obedience do not promote intellectual growth. Students need to develop the ability to analyze, question, and evaluate information critically. This approach allows them to explore different perspectives, form their own opinions, and contribute meaningfully to society. Moreover, education should also nurture creativity. Strict discipline can stifle creativity by focusing solely on conformity and uniformity. Creativity is essential for innovation, problem-solving, and adapting to an ever-changing world. By encouraging imagination, exploration, and originality, students are better equipped to face real-world challenges and contribute to the advancement of society. Collaboration is another vital aspect of education. Strict discipline may inadvertently discourage teamwork and cooperation by promoting individualistic behavior. In today's interconnected world, the ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and work in diverse groups is highly valued. By fostering collaboration, students learn from one another, develop social skills, and gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives. Lastly, education should provide opportunities for personal growth. Strict discipline alone may prioritize conformity over individual growth and self-expression. Students need space to explore their interests, discover their passions, and develop their unique talents. Personal growth goes beyond academic achievement and encompasses emotional intelligence, resilience, empathy, and self-awareness.

Read the excerpt from Wiesel’s All Rivers Run to the Sea. To this day I am shaken when I see a child, for behind him I glimpse other children. Starving, terrified, drained, they march without a backward glance toward truth and death—which are perhaps the same. Uncomplaining, unprotesting, asking no one’s pity, it is as if they have had enough of living on a planet so cruel, so vile and so filled with hate that their very innocence has brought their death. Read the text and study the images from Spiegelman’s Maus.

Answers

The excerpt from Elie Wiesel's "All Rivers Run to the Sea" expresses the author's profound emotional response upon encountering children, as they serve as haunting reminders of other suffering children who faced starvation, fear, and death. These innocent victims seemed resigned to their fate, perhaps due to the cruelty, vileness, and hatred pervasive in the world. This sentiment resonates with the themes depicted in Art Spiegelman's graphic novel "Maus."

Elie Wiesel's poignant words reflect his deep-seated disturbance when confronted with the sight of a child. In their innocent faces, he perceives the harrowing presence of countless other children who have suffered unimaginable horrors. These children, devoid of sustenance, consumed by fear, and drained of life, march forward without looking back. The relentless pursuit of truth and the inevitability of death seem intertwined for them, suggesting a grim reality. These innocent victims bear their suffering silently, without complaint or protest, seemingly resigned to their fate. It is as if their very purity and naivety have attracted the cruelty that ultimately brought about their demise.

The powerful message conveyed by Wiesel's words finds resonance in Art Spiegelman's "Maus," a graphic novel that chronicles the Holocaust through the author's father's experiences as a survivor. Spiegelman's work utilizes animal allegories, portraying Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, to depict the atrocities of the Holocaust. The book, with its stark imagery and raw storytelling, reveals the brutality and hatred that permeated the Nazi regime. It exposes the loss of innocence and the dehumanization of the victims, paralleling Wiesel's observations of the children he encounters. Both Wiesel's writing and Spiegelman's artistry serve as reminders of the profound impact of human cruelty and the devastating consequences it has on the innocent.

What caused Romeo & Juliet's death, destiny, or free-will? Explain how you know and support your ideas with quotes from the movie.

Answers

The question of whether Romeo and Juliet's death was caused by destiny or free will is a matter of interpretation, as it can be viewed from different perspectives. In Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet," both elements are present and can be seen as contributing factors to the tragic outcome.

Destiny or fate plays a significant role in the play, as there are numerous references to predestined events and the idea that the lovers' paths were already determined. For example, in Act I, Scene 4, Romeo has a premonition before attending the Capulet's masquerade:

ROMEO:

I fear, too early; for my mind misgives

Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,

Shall bitterly begin his fearful date

With this night's revels and expire the term

Of a despised life closed in my breast

Here, Romeo expresses a sense of foreboding and suggests that his life is somehow intertwined with a predetermined fate that will lead to his demise.

However, the characters' choices and actions also play a significant role in their tragic end, emphasizing the theme of free will. Romeo and Juliet make a series of decisions that contribute to their own downfall, such as their hasty and secret marriage, Romeo's impulsive nature, and their inability to communicate their plans effectively.

For instance, in Act III, Scene 1, Romeo chooses to engage in a fight with Tybalt after Tybalt kills Romeo's friend Mercutio. This impulsive act leads to Romeo being banished from Verona and sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to the tragic ending.

FRIAR LAURENCE:

A pack of blessings light upon thy back;

Happiness courts thee in her best array;

But, like a misbehaved and sullen wench,

Thou pout'st upon thy fortune and thy love.

Take heed, take heed, for such die miserable.

Go, get thee to thy love, as was decreed,

Ascend her chamber, hence and comfort her:

But look thou stay not till the watch be set,

For then thou canst not pass to Mantua;

Where thou shalt live till we can find a time

To blaze your marriage, reconcile your friends,

Beg pardon of the prince, and call thee back

With twenty hundred thousand times more joy

Than thou went'st forth in lamentation.

In this quote, Friar Laurence chastises Romeo for lamenting his banishment instead of being grateful for the opportunities he has been given. The friar points out that Romeo's attitude and choices have contributed to his current situation.
