Okita uses the tomato, a food native to the Americas, to highlight the speaker’s American identity, while Cisneros uses the English language to give her characters an American identity. The writers use bleak imagery to convey the sense of isolation they feel from their respective cultures. The speaker of Okita’s poem feels a sense of loss at the prospect of being moved from her home, while the speaker of Cisneros’s short story longs to leave her current location and return to America. The American identity of both speakers is highly questionable, as they frequently refer to their foreign identities.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS QUESTION PLEASE HELP
The aim of opinion writing, or persuasive writing, is to have your reader agree with your opinion/ point of view by the time they finish reading your work. This is a chance to use your persuasive skills, and your writing expertise to convince them that your stance on a particular issue or topic is the right one. This can be anything from your favourite ice cream flavour (mint chocolate chip!) to the political party you support.

There are 3 main ways to frame your written arguments (or reasons) that will change your readers mind:

1. Logic: using reason or common sense is one way of helping to prove why your stance on a particular issue is the right one. For example, if I wanted to persuade you that mint chocolate chip was the best ice cream flavour (it definitely is), I might say that when you eat it, you feel refreshed, which is the exact feeling you want on a hot summer day. The logic of wanting to feel refreshed on a hot summer day is the logical argument I used to make my point.

2. Emotion: pulling at the heartstrings of your audience, or "hitting them in the feels" as the kids say, is another very effective way to persuade someone to agree with you. As an example, think of the ads that you see on TV for the SPCA, or to donate money to a cause from a developing country. Showing the sad faces of pets and children make the audience feel emotional; upset and guilty, so we pick up the phone to donate.

3. Expertise: being able to speak with authority/expertise on a specific topic, is the final way to form an argument. If you are someone who does a lot of gaming, and you are trying to tell me which video game is the best in terms of quality and overall experience, I would be inclined to believe you since you know a lot about the gaming community and would be able to give accurate information.

Now that we know more about the specific ways you can argue/persuade/defend your opinion on any given topic, let's try out our new skill!

Below are some questions where I will ask you to pick ONE of two things. Your task is to tell me which one is better, and WHY. For example, use persuasive writing to tell me why Coke is better than Pepsi. Once you have done this, reread your writing and tell me if your argument was one of logic, emotion, or expertise.

Example: Hot OR Cold? Cold is always better than hot. In cold weather, you can bundle up in cute, cozy clothes, and snuggle with your pets to keep warm. In hot weather, I feel yucky and grumpy. Here, I used emotional arguments.

*Your answers will be more detailed, but I included the above just so you have an idea of what I am asking for.

*Written responses should be a paragraph EACH.

Read the excerpt from "The Lottery." Soon the men began to gather, surveying their own children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes. They stood together, away from the pile of stones in the corner, and their jokes were quiet and they smiled rather than laughed. The women, wearing faded house dresses and sweaters, came shortly after their menfolk. They greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip as they went to join their husbands. Which line from the excerpt provides clues about the setting?

Answers

Answer: Soon the men began to gather, surveying their own children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes.

Explanation:

In this book about sacrificing people in a town to ensure a good harvest, the setting is hinted at by the above sentence.

The men spoke of planting, rain and taxes which would be associated with a rural community that relies a lot on agriculture. We can therefore conclude that this is most likely a town in the countryside where most people are focused on farming.

Intemperance is the sin of our land, and, with our boundless prosperity, is coming in upon us like a flood; and if anything shall defeat the hopes of the world, which hang upon our experiment of civil liberty, it is that river of fire. . . . In every city and town the poor-tax, created chiefly by intemperance, is [increasing the burden on taxpaying citizens]. . . . The frequency of going upon the town [relying on public welfare] has taken away the reluctance of pride, and destroyed the motives to providence which the fear of poverty and suffering once supplied. The prospect of a destitute old age, or of a suffering family, no longer troubles the vicious portion of our community. They drink up their daily earnings, and bless God for the poor-house, and begin to look upon it as, of right, the drunkard's home. . . . Every intemperate and idle man, whom you behold tottering about the streets and steeping himself at the stores, regards your houses and lands as pledged to take care of him, puts his hands deep, annually, into your pockets. . . . Answer: d. Periodic bursts of religious reform and revivalism

Explanation:

The question requires identifying which continuities in U.S. history are reflected in the excerpt from Lyman Beecher´s Six Sermons on the Nature, Occasions, Signs, Evils, and Remedy of Intemperance (1829).

Beecher´s sermons on the nature and dangers of intemperance were delivered in the context of the Second Great Awakening, the Protestant religious revival that occurred in the United States in the early 19th century, and is one example of the periodic bursts of religious reform and revivalism. It´s important to remember that American Christian history has gone through four Great Awakenings: the first one in the 1730s, the Second beginning in the 1790s, the third Awakening starting in the 1850s, and the fourth one in the 1970s.
