THE MATCH
There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.
Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.
In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.
How does the author develop the idea that relying on nature was problematic? Please respond in three to five complete sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer.
Answer:
We note the author's intriguing statement at the outset when he said "that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make" a match.
Also, he further highlighted how problematic it was to depend on nature when he said "in the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark".
To express the problems further, the author also says that they would have to guard the fire but the fire would still go out sometimes and then they would have to go on long and difficult journeys.

Which lines from the text best support this theme? "The wind that carried west from Ilium brought me to Ismarus, on the far shore, a strongpoint on the coast of Cicones. I stormed that place and killed the men who fought." "I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home." He drew to his fist the cruel head of an arrow for Antinous just as the young man leaned to lift his beautiful drinking cup, embossed, two-handled, golden: the cup was in his fingers: the wine was even at his lips: and did he dream of death? "Spare your own people. As for ourselves, we'll make restitution of wine and meat consumed, and add, each one, a tithe of twenty oxen with gifts of bronze and gold to warm your heart."
Answer:
"I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home."
Explanation:
Homer's "The Odyssey" is an epic narrative about the journey of Odysseus and his men after the Battle of Troy, returning to their home in Ithaca. But the journey would take decades before they could set foot on the island, encountering mortals and gods along the way, who will pose as obstructions to their journey.
One characteristic of a leader is that a good leader takes responsibility for those in their charge. This theme is also found in this epic in the character of Odysseus when he marched the men he had sent to survey the land of the Lotus-eaters. When they failed to return safely back to the ship, courtesy of the Lotus that they were offered, Odysseus decided to deal with it on his own. So, he brought the men back and took them to the ship, ensuring that they are safely tied to the deck, and sailed out of that place before more of his men succumb to the lotus.
Thus, the correct answer that best supports the theme of such leadership quality is "I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home."

(1 - 3). Choose the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently from that of the others:
1. A. instead B. head C. eat D. weather 2. A. replace. B. raise C. badly D. save
3. A. caused B. promised C. advertised D. raised
Answer:
1). C). Eat
2). C). Badly
3). C). Advertised
Explanation:
Pronunciation plays a key role in determining the meaning of the words especially when they contain similar sounds. The words whose underlined portions pronounce differently are mentioned above.
In the first question, the words 'instead,' 'head,' and 'weather,' the morpheme '-ea' is pronounced similarly as 'e^.' While in 'eat,' it is pronounced as 'i:t.' Thus, 'eat' possesses a distinct pronunciation among the words provided in the group.
In the second, the sound of '-a' is similarly pronounced in 'save,' 'replace,' and 'raise' as 'ei.' However, in the word 'badly,' 'a' has a deeper sound as 'ae' and it is pronounced in a different manner. Hence option C is the correct answer.
Similarly, in the last question, the words 'caused,' 'promised,' and 'raised' read the participle suffix '-ed' in the same manner as ';zed' while 'advertised' is pronounced as '-aized.' Hence, it has a varied sound and thus, option C is correct again.

Write a story which ends as follows: It was then that I understood what sort of a man he was
Answer:
There lived once in Baghdad a very wealthy man, who lost all his substance and became so poor, that he could only earn his living by excessive labor. One night, he lay down to sleep, dejected and sick at heart, and saw in a dream one who said to him, "Thy fortune is at Cairo; go thither and seek it."
So he set out for Cairo; but, when he arrived there, night overtook him and he lay down to sleep in a mosque. Presently, as fate would have it, a company of thieves entered the mosque and made their way thence into an adjoining house; but the people of the house, being aroused by the noise, awoke and cried out; whereupon the chief of the police came to their aid with his officers. The robbers made off; but the police entered the mosque and finding the man from Baghdad asleep there, laid hold of him and beat him with palm-rods, till he was well-nigh dead.
Then they cast him into prison, where he abode three days, after which the chief of the police sent for him and said to him, "Whence art thou?"
"From Baghdad," answered he.
"And what brought thee to Cairo?" asked the magistrate.
Quoth the Baghdadi, "I saw in a dream one who said to me, 'Thy fortune is at Cairo; go thither to it.' But when I came hither, the fortune that he promised me proved to be the beating I had of thee.
The chief of the police laughed, till he showed his jaw teeth, and said, "O man of little wit, thrice have I seen in a dream one who said to me, 'There is in Baghdad a house of such a fashion and situate so-and-so, in the garden whereof is a fountain and thereunder a great sum of money buried. Go thither and take it.' Yet I went not; but thou, of thy little wit, hast journeyed from place to place, on the faith of a dream, which was but an illusion of sleep."
Then he gave him money, saying, "This is to help thee back to thy native land."
Now the house he had described was the man's own house in Baghdad; so the latter returned thither, and digging underneath the fountain in his garden, discovered a great treasure; and [thus] God gave him abundant fortune.

I've chosen “Flowers” by Lauren Spencer-Smith because, although i've never been heartbroken (obviously, im 15 years young), this song is very emotional. The first couple of times I listened to this song I was very close to crying. I may not know firsthand how heartbreak feels, but I look at heartbreak from the outside, from my parents (of which i have no idea who my father is, but i've heard enough stories of him to get emotional myself because of the things he's done to my family, especially to my beloved mother), my mothers relationship with my younger brothers father, my grandparents, to even my aunt and her relationship.
Lyrics:
Took me over to your house to meet your family
Introduce me to them, saying that you'd marry me
Then you'd look me in the eye and say, "It's just a joke"
Then you'd kiss me and I'd smile, did you even know?
When you'd say that kinda thing, I'd be excited
Got me hoping maybe one day you would mean it
Always thought I'd only make a fool of someone else
Now you've only gone and made me make one of myself
I guess that flowers aren't just used for big apologies
I guess I should've been more conscious how you spoke to me
'Cause when we'd fight, you'd give me space and not communicate
And for a while I thought that's what I should appreciate
Maybe I was holding onto what I thought you were
But when you think too hard, eventually it starts to hurt
The version of you in my head, now I know wasn't true
Young people fall for the wrong people, guess my one was you
I was getting any flight so we could make it work
You'd ignore me, coulda told me you were seeing her
Kinda hate myself for justifying your mistakes
Took a minute but I learned that the hard way
Who are you to tell me I can't be heartbroken?
Babe, you had the chance, the door for you was open
If it's what you need to tell yourself to sleep at night
Pretend I haven't found a man who finally treats me right
I guess that flowers aren't just used for big apologies
I guess I should've been more conscious how you spoke to me
'Cause when we'd fight, you'd give me space and not communicate
And for a while I thought that's what I should appreciate
Maybe I was holding onto what I thought you were
But when you think too hard, eventually it starts to hurt
The version of you in my head, now I know wasn't true
Young people fall for the wrong people, guess my one was you
If there's anything I've learned, it's you should watch yourself
If it's hurting you, then leave and go and get some help

This is a very poetic song and full of meanings, metaphors, rhymes and figurative language.
Basically, the song talks about narcissistic people, and going back into a relationship that you knew wouldn't work out, but still leading yourself on and in the end feeling embarrassed and making a fool from yourself, hence the lyric “Always thought I'd only make a fool of someone else, now you've only gone and made me make one of myself”. This song also talks about leaving a toxic relationship, then going into a new relationship and getting treated how anyone deserves to be treated, and young people creating a false reality of someone instead of realizing if they wanted to do something a good partner would do, they would, and if they don't then those two people aren't meant for each other. Also, the relationship being one sided with only one person trying to make sure it works out by doing everything in their power to make the other person happy, meanwhile the other is taking it for granted, and always justifying the other person's mistakes and not understanding your own self worth, hence the lyric “Kinda hate myself for justifying your mistakes, took a minute but I learned that the hard way”. Finally, it also talks about seeking any sort of help if you don't feel comfortable or safe in a relationship and realizing when you need to evacuate your relationship instead of convincing yourself things are normal when things are obviously not.

9. Henry talks to his dog as if it (understand) ..... him
Henry talks to his dog as if it understands him. This is a type of communication called anthropomorphism, which is when human-like qualities are attributed to non-human entities.
Anthropomorphism can be observed in several different situations, such as in literature, art, and popular culture. It can also be seen in everyday language when people refer to their pets as if they are human or when they describe inanimate objects as if they have emotions or personalities.
In Henry's case, he is projecting his own thoughts and feelings onto his dog, believing that it can understand him even though it cannot speak. While some people might find this behavior endearing, it can also be problematic because it can prevent people from understanding the true needs and behaviors of their pets.
Dogs, for example, communicate through body language, vocalizations, and scent, and it is important for owners to understand these forms of communication in order to provide proper care and training. Anthropomorphism is a common phenomenon that occurs in human society, and it can take many different forms.
While it can be entertaining or amusing, it can also be misleading and problematic, particularly in situations where it prevents people from accurately understanding the needs and behaviors of animals and other non-human entities.
