There is a tale, “The Ring of Gyges,” that Feldman sometimes tells his economist friends. It comes from Plato’s Republic. A student named Glaucon offered the story in response to a lesson by Socrates—who, like Adam Smith, argued that people are generally good even without enforcement. Glaucon, like Feldman’s economist friends, disagreed. He told of a shepherd named Gyges who stumbled upon a secret cavern with a corpse inside that wore a ring. When Gyges put on the ring, he found that it made him invisible. With no one able to monitor his behavior, Gyges proceeded to do woeful things—seduce the queen, murder the king, and so on. Glaucon’s story posed a moral question: could any man resist the temptation of evil if he knew his acts could not be witnessed? Glaucon seemed to think the answer was no. But Paul Feldman sides with Socrates and Adam Smith—for he knows the answer, at least 87 percent of the time, is yes. The example in the excerpt helps the authors arrive at which of the following conclusions? The majority of people are corrupt. The majority of people are honest. Glaucon and Paul Feldman were wrong. Socrates and Adam Smith were wrong.

Read this excerpt from "Hope, Despair, and Memory" by Elie Wiesel and answer the question. Of course we could try to forget the past. Why not? Is it not nature for a human being to repress what causes him pain, what causes him shame? Like the body, memory protects its wounds. When day breaks after a sleepless night, one's ghosts must withdraw; the dead are ordered back to their graves. But for the first time in history, we could not bury our dead. We bear their graves within ourselves. For us, forgetting was never an option. Deducing from context clues, what is the best statement of Wiesel's purpose in writing We bear their graves within ourselves? (A) to entertain through alliteration of "graves" and "ourselves" (B) to educate about the Holocaust (C) to establish connection with his readers (D) to enlighten with comparison of their souls with graves as the resting place for Holocaust victims

Answers

Answer:

The best statement of Wiesel's purpose in writing "WE bear their graves within ourselves" is:

D. To enlighten with comparison of their souls with graves as the resting place for Holocaust victims.

Explanation:

Elie Wiesel (1928 - 2016) was an American author originally born in Romania. Wiesel was a survivor of the Holocaust, when Jews were arrested and killed by German Nazis during World War II.

"Hope, Despair, and Memory" was an address given by Wiesel when he received the Nobel Prize. He speaks of his soul and the soul of other survivors as if they were graves in which the ones who were murdered are buried. His intention by comparing souls to graves is to emphasize that the survivors will never be able to forget what happened, that they will always carry, figuratively speaking, those who died within them. The atrocity and injustice were too great to be forgotten.

Italics, as used in the sentences "Only a week ago? One night? One single night?" are used
O to show these are foreign words
O to create irony, the opposite of Wiesel's intended meaning
to show the word is part of dialogue
O to show special emphasis or emotion

Explanation:

Parallelism is the repetition of the same grammatical structure inside a sentence. The purpose of using parallel sentences is to make them sound better as well as to make them easier to understand. Parallelism is often used when we provide examples or list items in a sentence.

Let's use sentence 1 as an example:

1. We have begun to exercise more, to get regular check-ups, and dieting.

We are listing the things we have begun to do. Out of the three things listed, two use the structure "to + verb", but one uses "verb + ing". Thus, the structure is not parallel. To correct it and make the sentence sound better, we can make them all use the structure "to + verb):

1. We have begun to exercise more, to get regular check-ups, and to diet.

O A. On the independent clause
OB. On the adverbial clause
O c. On the predicate
O D. On the dependent clause

Answers

Answer:

A. On the independent clause

Explanation:

The question above presents a complex sentence, which is the sentence formed by a dependent clause and an independent clause. The dependent clause is one that cannot have a coherent meaning on its own. In the sentence above, this clause is "Although she's late to meetings."

The independent clause, on the other hand, is one that manages to convey a coherent meaning even alone. In the sentence shown above, this clause is "she always contributes good ideas," which is also the point of greatest emphasis in the sentence, where the main point of the sentence is presented. In this case, we can affirm that the emphase of the sentence is presented in the independent clause.

You have read passages from the novels The Georges and the Jewels and Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse. Both were written in the first-person point of view.

Write an essay in which you compare the way the authors use the first-person point of view to develop the characters.

Be sure to cite specific examples from both passages.

Both stories are below! :D

Answers

Answer:

In this essay I will talk about the passages from the Georges and the Jewels and Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse. These two passages talk about horses riding and teaching in a scenic matter and in a first person view of the trainer and the horse.

With the the first passage (the Georges and the Jewels) they develope the characters by the way they enter the scene, actions they committed and how they talk to the other characters. You can tell the dad is very passionate about horse riding, wise and has been doing this for quite some time. He's wise and passionate because of the talk he has with Abby in paragraphs 8,9 and 10. He is also done it for a long time with the evidence "I started riding when I was 3 and started helping my dad train the horses when I was 8...". Abby is a child that doubts herself in her ability to train this certain, thinking its impossible. Hou can tell it has bucked her multiple times when she depicts the situation of when you get bucked perfectly and switched into a situation she was in herself. You can see that in these lines: "...you might lie there, as i did, with the wind knocked out of you and you think about how nice it would be to not get back on, because that horse is just dedicated to bucking you off. So that what I did..." This lassage describes characters in a less obvious way. Now on to the next passage.

In the second passage depicts less of the characteristics but more of the experience of the specific character. The horse mentioned in the story is a younger male horse who debates on whether the horse back riding industry is good or bad throughout the passage. He talks as if he is talking in past tense or telling a story. He develops throughout the passage by giving cons then debunking them with pros. At first the horse seems to think that horse back riding is bad but then he changes his mind as seen in: "...and under your chin and no way in the world you can get rid if that nasty hard thing; it is very bad. Yes, very bad. Or atleast I thought so..." The "Master" is described as a gentle and kind person. He was nice to the horse and placed stuff on and "in" the horse quite nicely and less rough. You can see this in: ",what with the nice oats, and what with my masters pats, nice words and gentle ways..." This passage described characters by how they talk and treat other characters. Now I'm going to compare the two and close out the essay

These two passages describe characters in similar and different ways. As we can tell they both describe the characters by dialogue and how other people talk about them. Black Beauty is in the perspective of a horse so the impression of people is different than of a human. In the G.A.T.J they talk more about the father and daughters relationship and how the father knows alot about the horses. That is the end of the essay and how Black Beauty and the G.A.T.J compare in terms of character development.

I hope this helps.

The comparison of the way the authors use the first-person point of view to develop the characters is:

Through their actions.Through their speech.Through their introduction in the scene.

What is First Person Point of View?

This refers to a writing perspective where an author makes a narration from the perspective of one person using the pronouns "Me", "I", "We", etc.

With this in mind and from the comparison of the texts, there is the use of direct and indirect characterization to describe the personalities and actions of each character.

It makes the biggest impact on the reader. When writing a article about something as important as this generally what an author will do to captivate the attention of the audience is to make it clear exactly how dire the situation is. So I would say that ending the first paragraph with something as impactful as #1 would be the best choice, as you really want to draw your reader in and make them acknowledge the topic, it will give the reader a sense of urgency to understand what is going on.
