Vegetation's spectral characteristics. Chlorophyll regulates the spectral characteristics of vegetation in the visible region of the spectrum.
In vegetation, the reflectance spectrum in the visible area is dominated by light absorption by leaf pigments (400–700 nm). Red and blue (400–500 nm) wavelengths are preferentially absorbed by chlorophyll pigments a and b. Chlorophyll is the photosynthetic component that enables plants to produce carbohydrates by photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and water.
The spectral reflectance of bare soil doesn't vary significantly with wavelength. The slope is influenced by the kind of soil and the amount of surface moisture, and the reflectance increases linearly with wavelength.
