In this story, we meet an Nipo-American girl who is unfairly accused by her friend, a white American girl. The entire charge is based on racism and xenophobia. The author of this text, however, approaches this issue with delicacy, showing that although xenphobia is painful and present in the country, there is hope that it will be overcome through love and tolerance among people.
"Mericans" also addresses the experience of foreigners in America. The author addresses the life of Mexicans, who when living in America, begin to abandon their native customs, which are suppressed by American customs, although these people are not considered Americans by society. In this book, the author addresses themes such as acculturation and cultural identification.
After reading these two texts, you should write down your perceptions of how these themes are worked throughout the text and organize a five-paragraph essay that should be done as follows:
1st paragraph: This paragraph will be the introduction, where you will briefly present the two texts and present your position in relation to them, that is, you will briefly and objectively present your opinion about them. The children don't understand why the grandmother is so mean yet she still prays for everyone, living or passed. The author tells us this by saying, "The awful grandmother knits the names of the dead and the living into one long prayer fringed with the grandchildren born in that barbaric country with its barbaric ways." The grandmother doesn't like that the children don't understand and appreciate their culture. When the grandmother sends them outside for not paying attention, a woman calls one of the children over to take a photo in Spanish. When one child speaks English, the woman speaking Spanish says, “But you speak English!” to which the brother replied “Yeah,” my brother says, “we’re Mericans.” The children don't practice their culture or even pay attention to it. Overall, the author shows the theme is culture, ethnic background, and race in many ways. Both authors use the theme of race, culture, and ethnic background in many ways. Both authors use a short narrative to tall their stories. While they are talking about different races, they are also talking about ethnic background in different ways. In Sandra Cisneros's story “Mericans”, they are forgetting the ways of their culture and what it should mean to them. Instead of practicing their culture, they are picking up the ways of this country culture. Whereas in, “In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers”, the fourteen-year-old girl is being blamed and judged for her ethnic background and culture.
