Neil Gaiman refers to three phrases that "make possible writing about the world of not-yet." which phrase best describes fahrenheit 451

Answers

Answer 1

Among the three phrases mentioned by Neil Gaiman that "make possible writing about the world of not-yet," one of them best describes Fahrenheit 451.

Neil Gaiman's reference to three phrases that enable writing about the world of not-yet suggests that these phrases capture the essence of speculative or futuristic storytelling. In the context of Fahrenheit 451, the phrase that best aligns with the novel's themes is "books are burning."

This phrase symbolizes the suppression of knowledge, censorship, and the control of information in the dystopian society depicted in Fahrenheit 451. The act of burning books in the novel represents the eradication of intellectual freedom and the destruction of critical thinking, highlighting the dangers of a society devoid of literature and ideas.

(Ch. 7) What is the significance of this line: "Thanks, Grease," he said, trying

to grin. Then he stopped. "I didn't mean that. I meant, thanks, kid."*

Answers

The line “Thanks, Grease," he said, trying to grin. Then he stopped. "I didn't mean that. I meant, thanks, kid" is significant for several reasons. The line is taken from chapter seven of S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Johnny is thanking Ponyboy after he brings him Gone with the Wind to read in the hospital. Here is the significance of the line:

Firstly, Johnny's choice of words is a testament to his character. Johnny is aware of the consequences of his actions and is apologetic for his wrongdoings. He doesn't shy away from admitting when he's wrong or when he's made a mistake.

Secondly, Johnny's use of the word "Grease" instead of Ponyboy's name is significant because it represents his struggle to accept the identity that society has given him. Johnny is from the "wrong side of the tracks," and as a result, he is labelled as "greaser" by society. The use of the word "grease" instead of Ponyboy's name represents the struggle Johnny faces in accepting his identity and how he is viewed by society.

Thirdly, Johnny's statement, "I didn't mean that. I meant, thanks, kid" is significant because it represents the brotherly bond that he and Ponyboy share. They have a close relationship, and Johnny views Ponyboy as a little brother. The use of the word "kid" shows Johnny's affection towards Ponyboy and how he wants to protect him. Johnny is grateful to Ponyboy for bringing him a book to read while he's in the hospital, and he wants to thank him properly for his kindness.

In conclusion, the line "Thanks, Grease," he said, trying to grin. Then he stopped. "I didn't mean that. I meant, thanks, kid" is significant because it highlights Johnny's character, represents his struggle with identity, and demonstrates his affection towards Ponyboy.

Read the excerpt from Wiesel’s All Rivers Run to the Sea. To this day I am shaken when I see a child, for behind him I glimpse other children. Starving, terrified, drained, they march without a backward glance toward truth and death—which are perhaps the same. Uncomplaining, unprotesting, asking no one’s pity, it is as if they have had enough of living on a planet so cruel, so vile and so filled with hate that their very innocence has brought their death. Read the text and study the images from Spiegelman’s Maus.

Answers

The excerpt from Elie Wiesel's "All Rivers Run to the Sea" expresses the author's profound emotional response upon encountering children, as they serve as haunting reminders of other suffering children who faced starvation, fear, and death. These innocent victims seemed resigned to their fate, perhaps due to the cruelty, vileness, and hatred pervasive in the world. This sentiment resonates with the themes depicted in Art Spiegelman's graphic novel "Maus."

Elie Wiesel's poignant words reflect his deep-seated disturbance when confronted with the sight of a child. In their innocent faces, he perceives the harrowing presence of countless other children who have suffered unimaginable horrors. These children, devoid of sustenance, consumed by fear, and drained of life, march forward without looking back. The relentless pursuit of truth and the inevitability of death seem intertwined for them, suggesting a grim reality. These innocent victims bear their suffering silently, without complaint or protest, seemingly resigned to their fate. It is as if their very purity and naivety have attracted the cruelty that ultimately brought about their demise.

The powerful message conveyed by Wiesel's words finds resonance in Art Spiegelman's "Maus," a graphic novel that chronicles the Holocaust through the author's father's experiences as a survivor. Spiegelman's work utilizes animal allegories, portraying Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, to depict the atrocities of the Holocaust. The book, with its stark imagery and raw storytelling, reveals the brutality and hatred that permeated the Nazi regime. It exposes the loss of innocence and the dehumanization of the victims, paralleling Wiesel's observations of the children he encounters. Both Wiesel's writing and Spiegelman's artistry serve as reminders of the profound impact of human cruelty and the devastating consequences it has on the innocent.

Nights and Dragons

From the memoir of author Abigail Prynne

1

I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts.

2

As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could notand did notexist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed.

3

I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed.

4

With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.

5

I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive.

Answers

The sentence from paragraph 4 that makes an explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions is: Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals.

The correct answer is option C.

This sentence straightforwardly states that biologists supported the aforementioned ideas with the use of sketches and models that were derived from existing animals. There is no underlying suggestion or hidden meaning in this statement. It presents a clear fact about the actions taken by biologists to support the theories related to dragons.

The author discusses how experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons and proposed alternative explanations. In paragraph 4, they mention that biologists supported these alternative ideas by utilizing sketches and models based on known animals. This statement provides evidence of the scientific backing that these ideas received and presents it as a matter of fact.

By highlighting the involvement of biologists and their use of sketches and models, the author aims to demonstrate that these alternative theories were not merely speculative but were supported by scientific investigation. This adds credibility to the possibility that dragons could have existed based on these proposed explanations.

In conclusion, the sentence "Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals" from paragraph 4 presents a clear and explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions. It contributes to the author's argument by providing scientific support for the alternative theories surrounding the existence of dragons.

Jess has saved dimes ($0. 10) and quarters ($0. 25) in their piggy bank. Define the variables and write a system of equations to determine the number of dimes and quarters if they have 25 coins worth $4. 00 in total. Then solve the system using the best method for the situation

Answers

There are 15 dimes and 10 quarters in Jess's piggy bank. To determine the number of dimes and quarters, we can set up a system of equations using variables and solve them.

Let's define the variables and write the equations. Then we will solve the system using the best method for the situation. Let's define the variables:

Let "d" represent the number of dimes.

Let "q" represent the number of quarters.

We can set up the following system of equations based on the given information:

Equation 1: 0.10d + 0.25q = 4.00 (representing the total value of the coins)

Equation 2: d + q = 25 (representing the total number of coins)

To solve this system, we can use the substitution or elimination method. In this case, since the coefficients of dimes and quarters are easily divisible, the elimination method would be the best approach. First, let's multiply Equation 2 by 0.10 to make the coefficients of d match:

0.10(d + q) = 0.10(25)

0.10d + 0.10q = 2.50

Now we can subtract Equation 1 from this new equation to eliminate the variable d:

0.10d + 0.10q - (0.10d + 0.25q) = 2.50 - 4.00

0.10q - 0.25q = -1.50

-0.15q = -1.50

q = -1.50 / -0.15

q = 10

Substituting this value back into Equation 2, we can find the value of d:

d + 10 = 25

d = 25 - 10

d = 15

Friar Lawrence can be seen as a force for good in this extract. To what extent do you agree with this view of Friar Lawrence based on this extract and the wider play?

Answers

In assessing Friar Lawrence's role as a force for good in the extract and the wider play, I partially agree with this view. Friar Lawrence displays qualities of compassion, wisdom, and a desire for peace, which can be interpreted as positive intentions. In the extract, the Friar expresses his hope that the marriage of Romeo and Juliet could end the ongoing feud between their families. He also provides guidance and advice to both Romeo and Juliet throughout the play, attempting to mediate their conflicts and offer solutions.

However, it is important to note that Friar Lawrence's good intentions become entangled in a web of secrecy and manipulation. He plays a pivotal role in devising the plan for Juliet's fake death, which ultimately leads to tragic consequences. The Friar's decision to administer a sleeping potion to Juliet and his failure to ensure Romeo receives the message about the plan contribute to the deaths of both young lovers. While his intentions may have been well-meaning, his actions demonstrate a lack of foresight and the consequences of his misguided attempts to resolve the situation.

Therefore, while Friar Lawrence exhibits elements of goodwill, his overall contribution to the events of the play can also be viewed as problematic. His actions inadvertently contribute to the tragedy, raising questions about his effectiveness as a force for good.

Answers

Based on the information provided, it appears that the change in pronoun use from "I" to "we" and then to "you" suggests a shift in perspective and audience addressed by the speaker or writer. Let's analyze the potential implications of this change:

1. "I": The use of "I" indicates that the speaker or writer is expressing their own thoughts, opinions, or experiences. It suggests a singular perspective or personal viewpoint.

2. "We": The shift to "we" indicates a broader inclusiveness, suggesting that the speaker or writer is referring to a collective group or a shared experience. It implies that the speaker is aligning themselves with a larger community or group of people who share similar thoughts or opinions.

3. "You": The use of "you" suggests a direct address to the reader or audience, creating a sense of engagement and personal connection. It implies that the speaker or writer is directly speaking to the individual reader, offering guidance, advice, or instructions.

Considering the shift in pronoun use, it does not directly contradict the previous answer about the predictions made by the witches in "Macbeth." The pronoun shift in the text you provided does not have a direct connection to the play or its plot. Write an essay of 300-400 words asking someone an outstanding unrealistic favor using fallacies use atleast 5 red herring exaggeration circular logic slippery slope scare tactics

Answers

I just found out that you've had a really successful year as a business owner, so I'm writing to ask you for an insane favor: I want you to cover my college expenses for the next four years.

Not only out of generosity, but also as a token of appreciation for the outstanding accomplishment you've had this year, I believe you should pay for my college expenses. To make the world a better place, you should assist someone in need. What better way to invest in the future of the next generation than to support education?

You are essentially depriving me of an education if you refuse to do me this favour. Without it, I will never be able to contribute as productively to society as I am capable of doing.

Your failure to pay for my college expenses can also result in more serious issues. College grads will unfortunately still be struggling to find fulfilling employment. Furthermore, if you missed the chance to have a significant impact on the world and improve its future, an entire generation of talented and skilled young people would be lost.

You must consent to covering my education expenses if you want to do the right thing. The only way to make sure that our society has a good future is to take this action.

This is a fantastic opportunity to share your blessings with people who are less fortunate. Future generations could profit from doing this. I appreciate your consideration of my request and your time in reading my essay.

a biologist sees that kind of bacteria splits in 2 every 10 min.If there were 4 bacteria on the slide 1 hour ago ,how many are there now

Answers

There would be 256 bacteria on the slide now, one hour later.

If the bacteria split in two every 10 minutes, we can calculate the number of bacteria after a certain time using exponential growth.

In one hour, there are 60 minutes. Since each bacterium splits in two every 10 minutes, there are six 10-minute intervals in one hour. Therefore, the number of bacteria doubles six times in one hour.

Starting with 4 bacteria, the doubling occurs as follows:

1 hour ago: 4 bacteria

After 10 minutes: 4 * 2 = 8 bacteria

After 20 minutes: 8 * 2 = 16 bacteria

After 30 minutes: 16 * 2 = 32 bacteria

After 40 minutes: 32 * 2 = 64 bacteria

After 50 minutes: 64 * 2 = 128 bacteria

After 60 minutes (1 hour): 128 * 2 = 256 bacteria

Therefore, there would be 256 bacteria on the slide now, one hour later.

Write paragraph about flood using active and passive voices

Answers

Floods can cause significant damage and destruction, impacting both human settlements and the natural environment.

In active voice, we can describe the flood as a force of nature that engulfs and devastates areas. In passive voice, the focus shifts to the affected areas and the consequences they face due to the floodwaters.

Floods, characterized by a surge of water, wreak havoc on their path, submerging homes, infrastructure, and farmlands. In the active voice, we can say, "The floodwaters engulfed the town, sweeping away houses and causing widespread devastation." This highlights the aggressive and overpowering nature of the flood as it directly acts upon the town.

In passive voice, we can emphasize the consequences faced by the affected areas. For example, we can say, "The town was submerged by the floodwaters, resulting in the destruction of houses and the displacement of residents." Here, the focus shifts to the town and the impact it experiences as a result of the flood. The passive voice allows us to highlight the consequences without specifically identifying the agent of the action.
