The children don't understand why the grandmother is so mean yet she still prays for everyone, living or passed. The author tells us this by saying, "The awful grandmother knits the names of the dead and the living into one long prayer fringed with the grandchildren born in that barbaric country with its barbaric ways." The grandmother doesn't like that the children don't understand and appreciate their culture. When the grandmother sends them outside for not paying attention, a woman calls one of the children over to take a photo in Spanish. When one child speaks English, the woman speaking Spanish says, “But you speak English!” to which the brother replied “Yeah,” my brother says, “we’re Mericans.” The children don't practice their culture or even pay attention to it. Overall, the author shows the theme is culture, ethnic background, and race in many ways. Both authors use the theme of race, culture, and ethnic background in many ways. Both authors use a short narrative to tall their stories. While they are talking about different races, they are also talking about ethnic background in different ways. In Sandra Cisneros's story “Mericans”, they are forgetting the ways of their culture and what it should mean to them.
